The Global Innovation Index (GII) is an annual ranking of countries that evaluates the performance of nearly 130 economies around the world in terms of innovation.
In 2019, the GII reveals that Estonia leads emerging Europe in the rankings and that the digital nation’s strongest suits are, not surprisingly: technology, knowledge and creativity.
The number one spot belongs to Switzerland which also topped the rankings the year before, whereas at the bottom of the list you’ll find countries such as Togo and Yemen.
The score is determined by taking an arithmetic mean of the scores in two other sub-indices: The Innovation Input Index and the Innovation Output Index.
The first index consists of five “pillars” while the second index consists of two “pillars”. Each pillar describes an attribute of innovation and comprises up to five indicators, and their score is calculated by the weighted average method.
